Futurism/Capitolism

I walked in on a philosophical conversation among friends no more than an hour ago. They were discussing how horrible the current state of the world is and how our human want for consumer goods was the thing to blame. Arguments were made that without without that need people could remain completely sustainable and be able to survive equally. Well sure, but that would be ignoring one very important human trait, Curiosity.
With the idea of futurism our view of the future will never be achieved, but it will always be sought after. It will always be different to the individual and that person has means to be progressive towards it in some way. No guarantees, as well it is constantly being hindered by things like a person's socioeconomic status for example. The evening factor in all of this is the currency unit. Yes people say it's the root of all evil, but it allows us to obtain the things we want.  It may be goods, information, power, but it's in the eye of the beholder. Even if they want to have the most honorable intentions with something like wildlife preservation for example. To help the tree's they have to study at a college to obtain information, which they pay for. All of this work and money to achieve a future that is a better planet.
The person in the discussion stated that he was completely against the idea of capitalism. Claiming he was going to retreat into the woods someday and try to not be apart of it. Of course he woke up and went to school this morning. Paying into the system to go to school as well, went to a job to pay for school. By striping down this system and focusing only on our needs we would no longer be enjoying life, simply trying to survive it.
